An App To Fight Food Waste & Hunger

An App To Fight Food Waste & Hunger

about.

This 48-hour challenge focused on designing a mobile app to bridge the gap between food donors and recipients. Businesses and event organizers often discard surplus food, while shelters and individuals face food insecurity. The app aimed to simplify food donations by creating efficient user flows and a streamlined experience for both donors and recipients.

The core challenge was designing for two distinct user groups—donors and recipients—while ensuring clarity and speed. Donors needed to quickly list surplus food and arrange pickups, while recipients needed an easy way to browse, request, and coordinate. Early flows revealed inefficiencies, such as difficulties in navigation and communication. With limited time, the design had to prioritize essential features without overwhelming users.

The final design introduced intuitive flows, a clean information architecture, and essential features like dual-view browsing (list + map), a simplified food detail page, and a built-in chat system for coordination. Starting with low-fidelity wireframes and moving into high-fidelity mockups ensured the focus remained on usability first. The result was an accessible, user-friendly app concept that streamlined donations, improved communication, and demonstrated how thoughtful UX can reduce food waste while addressing hunger.
